Grey is the Color of Theory

Grey is the Color of Theory

Hello Friends,

I am excited to share two upcoming events this month.

Starting this Monday, August 14th, my two-person exhibit Grey is the Color of Theory will be open to the public in the Clara and Allen Gresham Art Gallery at San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC). In the exhibit, Sapira Cheuk and I will compare and contrast two dynamically different art practices that share visual similarities. Sapira using Chinese brush painting to focus on issues of the body and women’s sexuality while I use photographic materials to illustrate the damage the photography industry (specifically Kodak) has had on the environment. The Clara and Allen Gresham Art Gallery is located at 701 S Mt. Vernon Ave. San Bernardino, CA 92410 and is free the public. Open hours Mon - Fri 10 am - 2:30 pm, please check the SBVC art gallery website for more information: http://www.valleycollege.edu/about-SBVC/facilities/art-gallery.php.

The reception will be held on August 23rd, 2017 from 5 pm to 7 pm.

In conjunction with this exhibit, tune into the KVC_aRts program on 91.9 KVCR this Wednesday, August 16 at 7:00 pm to hear me speak about the show. If you miss the radio broadcast you can listen here http://kvcrnews.org/arts - stream/0.

Now, for the sonically adventurous, I will be accompanying the Montreal trumpet player Philippe Battikha on Saturday, August 26th at The Press in Claremont at 129 Harvard Ave, Claremont, California 91711. I’m very excited about this show because it is a rare Southern California appearance by the Canadian Jazz musician and it will the first time that we’ve played together outside of New York. Also on the bill is BLUSH COFFIN and pop minimalist from Los Angeles DUDERELLA. The show was organized and is presented by Deathwave Records

Thank you for all your support.

Best regards,

Andrew

Automatic Midnight opening this Saturday May, 13 at C.A.C.t.T.U.S Long Beach

Automatic Midnight opening this Saturday May, 13 at C.A.C.t.T.U.S Long Beach

Hello Friends,

I hope you can join me this Saturday, May 13th for my latest solo exhibition.

Andrew K. Thompson’s first solo exhibition at C.A.C.t.T.U.S. Long Beach (326 Elm Ave. Long Beach, CA 90802) draws inspiration from Surrealist automatism, Aleatoric music and photographic elements to create an open-ended interaction between light, sound and audience. The result will be an Exquisite Corpse of sound that will be in a constant state of presence.

In the storefront windows of C.A.C.t.T.U.S. are two sound sculptures that translate ambient light into sound. Each sculpture is actively reading and transmitting sound twenty-four hours a day for the entire length of the exhibition. The chance sound composition will be determined by the amount and quality of light at any given time. A third sound sculpture placed in the exhibition area may be triggered by audience interaction.

Included in this exhibition is a selection of Thompson’s mesmerizing color chemigrams. Chemigrams are as close to Surrealist automatic drawing as a photographer can get by applying photographic chemistry onto to an exposed sheet of photo paper. Thompson veers in a different direction by removing layers of photographic emulsion with chemicals and marking devices like a sponge or a wire brush.

In Automatic Midnight, Thompson presents possibilities without answers or expectations. The audience will be invited to be a part of the creation of chance sound compositions that will lead into unexpected territory while viewing color photographs also made by chance.

Hello Friends,

I am proud to tell you that my work will be on display at the Klotz Gallery (booth #435) this year at The Photography Show presented by AIPAD (the Association of International Photography Art Dealers) this weekend. The exhibition is located at Pier 94 in New York City and will be on display from March 30th until April 2nd. This is my third year being included in the world’s most prestigious annual photography events that includes more than 115 galleries from around the world.

The Klotz Gallery booth is always meticulous curated and this year will include a sweet Frederick H. Evans photograph made in 1898, an immaculate 1926 Edward Weston, and many other great vintage and contemporary photographs by Andrew Borowiec, Amy Finkelstein and Alida Fish.

While at the show, please visit Gallery 1/1 (booth 110) that will have a great display of one-of-a-kind non-representational photographs by Jenna Kuiper, Ross Sonnenberg, and Brianna Tadeo. My work will not be on the walls of Gallery 1/1 this year but they will have some of my books and a handful of small abstract prints by me, so ask to see them.

As a way to celebrate my third year at AIPAD I am publishing a short video that demonstrates my process. Many a thank you is sent to Dominic Trujillo who filmed and edited the video. Click here to see the video.

Finally, I will be in New York City from Thursday morning until Sunday afternoon. I would love to see as many of you as I can while I’m there.

July Updates

July Updates

Happy Fourth of July friends,

I would like to take a moment during this holiday to share a few exciting updates with you.

First, I would like to remind you that the Woven exhibition is still on view at the Sturt Haaga Gallery at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge. Curator John David O’Brien assembled an excellent group of artists and put together a great show that I am very proud to be a part of. The gardens are located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011 and the gallery admission is free with regular Garden Admission (parking is free) from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM daily except Mondays when the Sturt Haaga Gallery is closed. The show will be up until the end of August.

Second, I have donated a piece for the PØST Los Angeles silent auction and party. For those unfamiliar with PØST, it is an experimental artist-run venue that has supported the Los Angeles art community twenty-one years. The amount of participating artist is too lengthy to list here but it is a who’s-who of Los Angeles based artists and I am excited to have been invited to partake. By following this link, you can bid on my work from now until Saturday, July 9th at 8pm. Also, if you’re in the LA area join us for the party at 1206 Maple Avenue #515, LA, CA 90015 from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

If that wasn’t enough, the Alan Klotz Gallery has three new pieces of mine listed in the New Acquisitions section of his website. You can see my work surrounded by such luminaries as Minor White, John Florea, Alida Fish and 2015 Aaron Siskind IPF Grant recipient, Amy Finkelstein.

Finally, there is one last Time Interwoven book for sale. Once it’s gone, they’re all gone and the edition will be closed. If you would like to purchase the last copy and/or my other book New Landscapes, I encourage you to check out my web store. Each book costs $20 and are signed and numbered

Don’t forget to follow my social media accounts (Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook) to see a new image daily.

Thanks again for supporting me.

May Updates

May Updates

Hello Friends,

It’s been a little over a month since updated you.

April was very good to me. First, my accountant got me a sweet tax refund, which allowed me to traveled to New York to attend the AIPAD fair. The fair was great because my work got a lot of attention from interested collectors, I made a lot of new connections and had a great time catching up with old friends and making new ones. There are other exciting opportunities for my work that came from this trip but I will share the details later once everything has been solidified.

For friends in the Southern California region, I would like to invite you to see the new exhibition title Woven at the Sturt Haaga Gallery at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge. The exhibit will be open to the public starting Tuesday, May 17 and will run through Sunday, August 28, 2016. I am in great company with this list of artists: Marsia Alexander-Clarke, Melanie Ciccone, Clifford Eberly, Susan Feldman, Agustin Garza, Jenny Hart, Nicholette Kominos, Dinh Q. Le, Kristin Leachman, Jairlyn Mason, Thinh Nguyen, Echiko Ohira, James Richards, Meriel Stern, Joan Weinzettle, Pontus Willfors. John David O’Brien curated the exhibit and here are a few words from him about the show, “Like weaving itself, the premise of this exhibition is both simple and satisfyingly complex. When the purpose of weaving transcends utility and enters art, we see in full the many meanings and association to be found in the act of weaving, and in things woven.” The gallery admission is free with regular Garden Admission (parking is free) from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM daily except Mondays when the Sturt Haaga Gallery is closed.

In case you got a sweet tax refund too, I would like to tell you about my most recent limited edition photo book titled New Landscapes. The book was initially published for AIPAD and contains the images that where shown in the Klotz Gallery booth plus a few more. If you would like to purchase a copy of this or my other book Time Interwoven, I encourage you to check out my web store. Each book costs $20 and are signed and numbered.

Don’t forget to follow my social media accounts (Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook) to see a new image daily.

Thanks again for supporting me.

Best regards,

Andrew
